Business calculator · prototype

Business carbon footprint calculator, for small teams.

Estimate your company’s yearly emissions in six steps, using published EPA emission factors. Enter yearly totals; leave anything you don’t know at zero. Just you? Try the personal calculator.

1 · Electricity (Scope 2)

Factor: 0.350 kg CO₂/kWh, the U.S. average from EPA eGRID2023 (771.5 lb/MWh). Find kWh on your utility bills.

2 · Natural gas (Scope 1)

Factor: 5.31 kg CO₂/therm (53.06 kg CO₂/MMBtu), EPA GHG Emission Factors Hub.

3 · Company vehicles & fuel (Scope 1)

Factors: gasoline 8.887 kg CO₂/gal (EPA); diesel 10.21 kg CO₂/gal (EPA Emission Factors Hub).

4 · Business travel (Scope 3)

Per passenger-mile: short 0.207, medium 0.129, long 0.163 kg CO₂ (EPA Hub, business travel). Assumed one-way distances: 200, 1,000 and 4,000 miles. Car miles use 25 mpg and the EPA gasoline factor.

5 · Employees & commuting (Scope 3)

Drive-alone miles ÷ mpg × 8.887 kg CO₂/gal (EPA). Transit, biking and remote days are counted as zero here, so this is a simplification.

6 · Cloud & data centers (optional)

Get reported figures from AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool, Google Cloud Carbon Footprint or Microsoft Emissions Impact Dashboard. kWh uses the eGRID factor. We don’t convert dollars of spend, because there’s no reliable published factor we’d stand behind.

FAQ

Business footprint questions.

What does this business carbon footprint calculator include?

It estimates Scope 1 (natural gas burned on site and fuel in company vehicles), Scope 2 (purchased electricity) and the parts of Scope 3 most small businesses can measure easily: business travel and employee commuting, plus optional cloud computing. Scopes follow the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.

How accurate is the estimate?

It is a screening estimate, not an audited inventory. It uses U.S. average emission factors from the EPA, so your real number will differ with your utility, vehicles and travel. Use it to see where your biggest sources are.

Where do I find the numbers to enter?

Electricity (kWh) and natural gas (therms) are on your utility bills. Fuel gallons are on fuel-card or expense reports. Flight counts come from travel bookings. For cloud, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure each offer a free carbon footprint dashboard.

Why don’t you convert cloud spend in dollars to emissions?

Dollar-based factors for cloud services vary widely and go stale fast, so we don’t guess. Enter the emissions your provider reports, or the electricity in kWh if you know it.

Can I offset my business footprint here?

Not yet. Checkout on carboncredit.earth is a prototype and no real credits are sold. See our individual calculator for the example flow.
